staying awake

I am so afraid
of not falling asleep
that I never fall asleep
like I should
I should be sawing logs into firewood
but I am so afraid
of staying awake
that staying awake
is all I do
I've tried pills and drinking
still, I lie there thinking
for God's sake!
give me a break!
is there a worse fate
than staying awake
